A rocky ridge above the town

The Broumov Walls form a massive sandstone ridge stretching north of Broumov and rank among the most striking natural scenery in the whole region. They were formed by erosion of Cretaceous sandstone and today form part of the Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area — one of the largest areas of rock cities in the Czech Republic. The ridge separates the Broumov basin from the Polish side of the border and offers panoramic views into both countries.

The ridge's highest point is Božanovský Špičák at 773 metres above sea level, from where, on a clear day, there is a 360-degree view over the whole Broumov region, the Jestřebí Mountains and the more distant Krkonoše. The rock formations and deep forests around the ridge are home to a number of rare plant and animal species, which is why the area is under strict protection.

The Hvězda and Supí hnízdo lookouts

The most popular destination for a trip to the Broumov Walls is the Hvězda lookout, where a baroque Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows has stood on a rocky ridge since 1733. A circuit with a grand exterior staircase and a Stations of the Cross chapel runs around the chapel, and the lookout offers a 360-degree view into the Broumov basin and the surrounding Czech and Polish hills. A little further on, the Supí hnízdo lookout rock beckons at 702 metres above sea level, from where, in good visibility, you can see as far as the outline of the distant Krkonoše.

Marked hiking trails lead onto the ridge from several directions — the shortest approach is from the car park at the Slavný settlement, while other routes lead directly from Broumov through the forest. Most circuits are easy and manageable even for families with children, though you should expect a good walk through the forest and a few tens of metres of elevation gain.
