Broumov Monastery
A baroque gem of the Broumov region, just 2 km from Vila Marcelka — accommodation in Broumov with a view of the monastery towers.
History of the monastery
Broumov Monastery is one of the most important baroque monuments in the Czech Republic and, at the same time, the heart of the whole Broumov region. It was founded by Benedictine monks back in the 14th century on the site of an older fortress, which King Přemysl Otakar I granted to the order together with the entire Broumov estate. Its present grand baroque appearance was given to it at the beginning of the 18th century by father and son, architects Kryštof and Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer, who also signed ten surrounding Broumov churches.
Over its long history the monastery went through numerous trials — from the Hussite wars, through the Thirty Years' War, when the Swedish army carried off the precious Devil's Bible manuscript, to the dissolution of the monastic order by the communist regime in the 20th century. The Benedictines returned to the monastery after the Velvet Revolution, and today the grounds are open to the public.
The monastery library and the Turin Shroud
The precious monastery library holds over 17,000 volumes of historic prints and is one of the best-preserved baroque libraries in the country. The monastery refectory also houses a unique painted copy of the Turin Shroud, discovered by researchers only in 1999 — the shroud that tradition holds to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. The abbot's wing today houses the Museum of the Broumov Region with further exhibitions devoted to the history of the region.
Visiting and tour routes
The monastery grounds offer several tour routes of varying length and focus — from the basic circuit through the state rooms, through a tour of the library, up to climbing the monastery tower with a view over the whole Broumov region. Tours run with a guide at regular intervals; in high season it is advisable to book tickets in advance, especially at weekends.
Thanks to the location of Vila Marcelka right in Broumov, the monastery is within reach on foot or by bike — the journey takes just a few minutes, so you can plan your visit at any time during your stay without needing to drive anywhere.
