A table mountain with a rock labyrinth

Ostaš is a striking table mountain above Police nad Metují, its summit plateau ringed by a sandstone rock rim with deep ravines and bizarre towers. Hidden within it is a rock labyrinth split into an Upper and Lower Labyrinth — narrow gorges, passages between boulders and viewing platforms, all linked by a circular nature trail. Compared with neighbouring Adršpach, Ostaš tends to be far quieter and less visited, while offering similarly striking scenery.

The summit plateau has been protected as a national nature reserve since 1956, thanks to rare plant communities and birds that nest on its inaccessible rock faces. The circuit is easy and manageable for families with children, though you'll cross a few ladders and steps in the narrowest parts of the labyrinth.

History carved in rock and a popular climbing spot

The rock formations on Ostaš carry names such as Zrádce ("the Traitor") or Sluj českých bratří ("the Cave of the Bohemian Brethren"), recalling a time when the rocks sheltered the people of Police during wars. Ostaš remains a popular climbing area today, with more than 500 marked routes of varying difficulty — the first recorded ascent of the Cikánka tower dates back to 1939, according to local chronicles.

On the way to the lookout points you can detour to the Samaritánka spring, with its sandstone relief from 1856 — a favourite resting spot along the trail. From the viewing points at the edge of the plateau there are wide views over Police nad Metují and the surrounding Broumovsko countryside.
